John Lewis, James Altobello, and I spent an enjoyable morning on
18 May, at the B&O Railroad
Museum... James had the presence of mind to bring both a
camera and batteries for that camera, so we're fortunate to have
some candid pics of the visit! As you may notice, the museum
was running railfan trips from the museum proper across the yard to,
well, another part of the yard, using a little dockside 0-4-0 tank
loco to haul it. This was my first time ever on a steam train
and I had no idea how much coal smelled!
If you've never visited this museum, you're missing a lot!
The roundhouse has almost 20 locomotives of all types in it
including a nice Class C (3 truck) Shay, a 1880 vintage 4-4-0
American, a Ten Theeler, a Consolidation, and many others. The
yard itself is full of locomotives - One Ten Wheeler looks to be
pretty decrepit but the others, including an immense 2-6-6-6 (!) are
in nice shape. I finally learned how the water gets
from the tender to the boiler on one of these beasts...
Admission runs about $8 (plus $4 if there are trains running and you
want to ride...). This, to me, was a bargain; my next visit
will be with plenty of camera memory and plenty of batteries!
