Another
One Bites The Dust
Requiem For A Hobby Shop by Fred Obermeyer
Well, nobody
even had a club shirt or hat on did they (except maybe the guy behind
the camera)? Nonetheless, there were a bunch of happy guys during that
last hour before final closing time on April 1st. About
150 hamburgers and hotdogs were gobbled up. A lot of drinks went down
quickly. The grill with hickory smoke was even bringing the other
tenants over the party with us. The
Bull was outdoors and the
sales were inside, but the barbeque could be smelled everywhere. One
guy even said he could smell it as he turned off I95.
Everyone
who came by stayed almost all day. The boys from RANTRAK
came up and we had a blast with them. Many of the NVNTRAKers
showed up to get something at 70% off or to grab some grub from the
grill. It was a perfect day and a happy crowd. Over 100 people stopped
by.
The
store was vacated in two weeks after the party. I returned the keys
with a sad last look around. Yes, it was sad, but..... I’ll see
‘em at a show or train event in the future. My
best days in the shop were when it opened and the club would meet in
the shop — with sodas and chips — and the big party at the end.
I’ll still see you guys soon. I miss everybody a lot.

The
gentleman on the far right in the last picture was the last customer. He
received a special Obies Trains collector car signed by Fred as a going away gift.
